Email: Rick Ufford-Chase

Rick was elected moderator of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) at the 216th General Assembly in Richmond, Virginia, in June 2004. For more about elder Rick Ufford-Chase, click here.

Rick has been a Presbyterian mission worker for almost twenty years. After having served for three and a half years as a mission volunteer, and for 13 years as a mission diaconal worker, in 2001 he became a mission co-worker. Rick is assigned to work with two non-profit, ecumenical organizations: CEDEPCA, in Guatemala, and BorderLinks (www.borderlinks.org) on the U.S./Mexico border, an organization he co-founded in 1987 and with which he still serves as director.

Although Rick’s work as international director of BorderLinks is a full-time job, BorderLinks and CEDEPCA are sister organizations that have agreed to work closely in areas of common interest and mission. In 2003, Rick and his family took a sabbatical from their human rights and education work on the U.S./Mexico border to spend six months working with CEDEPCA in Guatemala. During their time there, Rick helped to lead delegations from the United States on mission education trips, while Kitty volunteered with the women’s advocacy programs of CEDEPCA to offer workshops on alternatives to violence.

Rick’s wife, Kitty, is a Quaker who worked for the American Friends Service Committee for almost 12 years. Her work as director of the Arizona area program of the AFSC was to support committees of volunteers who work in a wide range of areas including alternatives to violence workshops, anti-death-penalty work, organizing workers in Mexico, educating on global economic issues, and providing support for prisoners and their families.

Rick’s and Kitty’s son Teo (which is short for "Timothy” in Spanish), attends a public school in Arizona where the language of instruction is Spanish. His favorite activity is to play soccer. He has a vivid imagination and loves to read and to build with Legos.

Since their return to the United States in the summer of 2003, Rick and Kitty both trained to become reservists with Christian Peacemaker Teams. They are both very committed to the work of providing a nonviolent, Christian presence in the midst of extreme violence. Since Rick’s election as Moderator the General Assembly in June of 2004, Kitty has been working as the office coordinator for the Tucson/Pima County Women’s Commission in Arizona. Her primary focus is to provide a sense of stability for Teo while Rick travels an average of eighteen to twenty days per month. Rick’s term as Moderator ends in June 2006.

Rick graduated from Colorado College with a BA in psychology and attended Princeton Theological Seminary before becoming a mission volunteer. Rick is a member of Southside Presbyterian Church in Tucson, Arizona, where he was ordained to the office of elder.
