Myanmar (Burma)
The Presbyterian Church of Myanmar (PCM) was founded in 1956. This relatively new church primarily serves people who live in the hill country along the border with India and Bangladesh and who speak many different languages. To foster unity while recognizing diversity, the PCM has developed the synods of their General Assembly around language groups while maintaining a strong interconnection as a whole. Through the Presbyterian Women’s organization of their church, PCM members are proud participants in the Handful of Rice Offering in which each woman gives a handful of rice every day. The rice is collected and used to feed the hungry in the church, and the remainder is sold to fund mission beyond the church. In addition to the PCM, the PC(USA) has had a relationship with the Myanmar Council of Churches.
Malaysia
The Presbyterian Church of Malaysia (PCM) has four presbyteries, three of which have predominantly Chinese-speaking members. The fourth, called the English presbytery, supports many Bahasa language-speaking congregations and several Tamil-speaking groups in addition to ministering to the needs of English-speaking congregants. The PCM is working to improve the educational and economic outlook for marginalized people groups in Malaysia by providing volunteer teachers and vocational trainers to outlying villages. The PCM is also collaborating with the Presbyterian Church of Singapore in outreach projects in Myanmar, Cambodia, Indonesia, and Thailand.
