Korea (North)

May Friendship Day

The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) works in partnership with the Korean Christian Federation (KCF) in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea). At one time, the North had a very strong Christian presence and the capital city of Pyongyang was called “the Jerusalem of Asia.” All of the church buildings and Christian schools were destroyed during the Korean War of 1950–1953, but the spiritual strength of the people lived on. Thirteen thousand Christians reportedly worship in five hundred house churches in North Korea. The Asia and the Pacific Office of World Mission of the PC(USA) provides food aid to North Korea through KCF’sBongsoo Noodle Factory in Pyongyang as well as the Kyongam Noodle Factory in Sariwon, North Hwanghae Province.

Mongolia

The Presbyterian Church of Korea founded Ulaanbaatar University in Mongolia’s capital city in 1992. As one of the best private schools in the country, Ulaanbaatar University provides both education based on Christian principles and services to the community.

Yonsei Friendship Hospital in Ulaanbaatar is further evidence of the ongoing Korean humanitarian and evangelistic outreach in Mongolia. Yonsei University, one of the three largest universities in Korea, was founded by Presbyterian missionaries from the United States more than one hundred years ago. Now self-sufficient, Yonsei University has established its own mission through medical exchange programs in Africa, South America, and Asia.
