Afghanistan
On the outskirts of Kabul, Church World Service has worked with its partner, the Afghan Development Association, to provide housing for dozens of families. One family that received housing recounted a painful journey that is all too common among displaced Afghans. The family of six was uprooted from their home community, Jalalabad, and traveled east, finally reaching a refugee camp in Pakistan. Then the family returned to Jalalabad and went on to Kabul, where they have lived since the Taliban fell in 2001.
Before they moved into their new home, Malik, Bassri, and their four children were living in a dark, cramped hillside cave. Bassri said the cave’s possible collapse was a constant and draining concern for the family as they eked out a living. “Now we don’t have those worries. We are happy,” Bassri said.
Vietnam
Saigon, like many cities, is filled with street children who have little food, no money, and no home. Minh and his wife, Blessing, parents of a baby girl, decided to respond to these needs by opening their home to boys. One by one they began to take in boys ranging in age from seven to fifteen. Family members and church leaders discouraged them from taking on this kind of ministry because as the youth leader of the Presbyterian Church of Vietnam, Minh’s income was insufficient to cover the needs of the eight boys and his own family. Yet, inspired by the life’s work of evangelist George Müller, Minh and Blessing in humble dependence look to God through prayer for their daily provision.
