Equatorial Guinea
It was the dry season in Equatorial Guinea and the days of March were hot. I was riding a bus from the city of Bata to the city of Ebibeyin, visiting congregations. When the bus came to a stop we observed a large group of people with plastic containers. They were lining up to get water from a fresh spring to take back home. They were willing to walk a great distance and stand in a long line because they had no other source of drinking water.
Viewing this scene made me realize how many times the church has left its living source and secure foundation of life — Jesus Christ. Christians, even some leaders, sometimes disregard God’s love and compassion and the servant nature of Christian ministry.

Rwanda
Rwanda is a beautiful, green land of a thousand hills in the Great Lakes region of Africa. It is also a predominantly Christian country. Since the 1994 genocide the Rwandan people have taken many strides toward unity, and the churches have worked hard at ecumenism. They have sought to aid the orphans and widows of the war and to help those still traumatized by its brutality. The PC(USA) over the last two decades has maintained a partnership relationship with the Presbyterian Church in Rwanda. It has also given scholarships to students at the Protestant Theological College of Butare, a nondenominational seminary that is educating church leaders for a new era.
