The Presbytery of
Scioto Valley has placed renewed emphasis on providing opportunities
for the youth of its 113 congregations with 23,940 members.
This emphasis began in recognition of the need to give youth
from smaller congregations the opportunitiy to be part of a
larger group of Presbyterian young people.
As a part of this process, the Youth Ministry Committee decided
to let go of the annual Youth Rally and try some different activities.
In 2005, it held a Presbyterian BandFest for which youth bands
from area churches were invited to play. A social event with
music, dancing, food, and games, BandFest continued in 2006,
and it looks to be an annual event that will continue to provide
young musicians an audience and young listeners an opportunity
to hear some new music.
Another highlight of the presbytery’s youth ministry
is the growth of the winter retreat. Held at a campground south
of Columbus, the winter retreat brings together middle school
and high school youth to worship, play, and learn. In 2007,
the topic of the youth retreat was based on the theme of the
Triennium, “Hope Is in Our Midst.” For youth who
were attending confirmation programs in their churches, classes
were also offered on Presbyterian theology and Presbyterian
government.
In addition to coordinating summer opportunities like the Youth
Triennium, the presbytery offers training events that always
include opportunities for leaders of youth to communicate and
learn about the needs and joys of working with youth. |
