The
Wee School was organized by mission volunteers and elders of
the Church of the Torch in Kikuyu. It serves 270 vulnerable
children, 37 of whom are refugees. Mission co-workers Lyle and
Terry Dykstra, who have taken a special interest in the Wee
School, write that the students are a determined and spunky
group. “In competition with the schools in our area—whose
students have parents who pay school fees and provide uniforms
and shoes—our little ragtag group played without shoes
and won the local soccer tournament. Our boys’ team took
first place, and the girls’ team was second.”
Prayer
Loving God, thank you for the spunk that is part of being a
healthy child. We ask your blessing on ministries like the Wee
School that make it possible for children to bloom. We ask this
in the name of your Son. Amen.
Rwanda
The Presbyterian Church in Rwanda (EPR), established in 1907,
has over 400,000 members who seek to live and grow in their
faith and to reach out to their fellow citizens. One of the
projects of the EPR, the Presbyterian Center for the Love of
Children, is a haven for some of the 6,000 street children who
live mostly in the capital city of Kigali. At the center the
children receive food and clothing, education, job training,
medical care, and spiritual healing, and there is hope that
their lives can be changed from bare survival to at least modest
success. Dormitories are being constructed to house the children
so they will not have to return to the streets at the end of
the day. |
