Equatorial Guinea,
one of the smallest countries in continental Africa, was settled
by the Portuguese in 1471, was ceded to Spain in 1778, and gained
independence in 1968.
Some of the first Presbyterian missionaries to Africa began
their work over 150 years ago in what is today Equatorial Guinea.
Their work eventually merged with that of the Methodist Church
and the Worldwide Evangelization Crusade to form the Evangelical
Church of Equatorial Guinea, and finally, the Reformed Presbyterian
Church of Equatorial Guinea (IRPGE).
In this strongly Roman Catholic country, the IRPGE—the
PC(USA) partner—is a small denomination that seeks to
be a strong witness for Christ through a holistic approach to
ministry that includes education and leadership development,
community development, evangelism, and new church development.
The IRPGE is committed to providing quality education for children
and youth.
Mission co-workers Andres and Gloria Garcia write, “Thanks
to generous support from the PC(USA) and the Reformed Church
of (Bern) Switzerland, a computer lab has been installed in
the building under construction at the school. Lab equipment,
technical advice, and financial aid for students have been provided
and are encouraging our brothers and sisters to bear witness
of the gospel of Jesus Christ in Equatorial Guinea.” |
