Smokey, a 10-year-old
dog, has a unique gift of bringing people together to do God’s
work. Herman Orr, Smokey’s owner, is a member of Christ
Presbyterian Church in Milwaukee. “We begin each day with
a walk in the park,” explains Orr. “It’s a
time of devotion, a chance to enjoy nature and connect with
people from many walks of life.”
Smokey’s personality attracted dogs (and their owners)
into conversation about how to help youth in Milwaukee. Friendships
developed among the group, which became a source of prayer and
support.
Mr. Orr, a principal in the Milwaukee Public Schools for thirty-two
years, shared his vision of a safe house for youth. Through
this group and his church, he found both an architect and the
base funding to begin construction. In particular, funding came
from the presbytery’s Mission Partnerships team.
The JOY (Just Outstanding Youth) Center is a two-story building
adjacent to the church. It has recreation space, meeting rooms,
a computer, a library, a music and speech room, and a stage.
The program’s goal is to teach African American youth
accountability, responsibility, spirituality, and cultural pride.
In 2007, thirty boys and twelve girls enrolled from the church
and surrounding community.
The Presbytery of Milwaukee is richly diverse, with 11,280
members in 48 churches. Within its bounds are Presbyterian-related
