Ghana

In Ghana, the PC(USA) partners with two denominations. One is the Presbyterian Church of Ghana and the other, the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana (EPCG). The EPCG was initially the Ewe Church of Ghana, but it changed in 1927 when it became the Ewe Presbyterian Church and again in 1954 when the church began expanding beyond Eweland, or beyond the Ewe people group. At that time it became the Evangelical Presbyterian Church. The EPCG has continued to grow and now has a membership of about 200,000 people in 787 congregations around Ghana.

A new and unique ministry of the EPCG is the development of a National Spiritual Resource and Healing Centre. In October 2004, the Centre was opened in Ho, home of the national headquarters of the church. Its chapel has been built, although the doors and windows have not yet been put in place. A large stone cross has been erected on the grounds behind the church with open space around it, providing a place where people can pray and meditate individually or in groups.

People come almost every day, but on Friday there is a specific service for healing and deliverance, so many more come then. Throughout Africa small independent churches are cropping up on street corners. In part this is because they often preach a prosperity gospel that attracts people. But they also concentrate on messages of instant healing and deliverance. By devoting a day in the Centre when people can be ministered to and receive and be in prayer, the EPCG is addressing a huge need in their communities, but with a theology that is true to the Word of God and the person of Jesus Christ who enters into pain and suffering.

The church asks for prayers for the development and ministry of this Centre, that everything it does will glorify God and edify all human beings.
