The Synod of the Southwest
In 2006, fourteen people from the Synod of the Southwest (SSW) traveled on a mission study tour to Lima, Peru. There they began a relationship with the ecumenical seminary, Universidad Biblica Latinoamericana (UBL), where the Rev. Dr. Harry Horne, PC(USA) mission co-worker, serves as professor of Hebrew and Greek. The Rev. Horne helped tour participants understand the Latin American context for studies, which concentrates on helping Peruvians become interpreters of the word of God for their communities and to share the messages of God’s love, care, and justice.
During Mission Challenge ’07, Rev. Horne traveled throughout the synod sharing the stories of UBL students. He shared about Latin America with people across Arizona and New Mexico and he learned about life there. He visited Cook School for Christian Leadership in Tempe, where he could compare its educational training and that of UBL. He went to the campus of Menaul School in Albuquerque. He visited ministries along the Mexican border and learned more about the challenges immigrants face.
Ghost Ranch Conference Centers in Abiquiu and Santa Fe, New Mexico, are located in SSW along with 164 churches with 32,927 members.

God of all creation, we give you thanks for opportunities to join with other Christians in learning about other cultures and to build friendships with those who are brought near to us in Christ Jesus. We give thanks especially for our sisters and brothers whose call to ministry has brought them to UBL. Teach us to be faithful partners in service of the gospel. Amen.
