Mozambique

Because polluted water is responsible for 80 percent of the world’s diseases, access to clean water is vital. In Tete Province, Mozambique, former mission workers Bob and Bobbi Snyder helped communities dig wells. The Snyders wrote about the importance of this ministry. “If we can help people find pure water, we can greatly reduce the incidence of disease in their villages. We have dug nine wells so far and hope to finish another eight before the end of the year. I wish you could see the joy on people’s faces when they come to the well for water.”

Charles Wonnenberg, former mission worker, and twelve visiting pastors drove for three and a half hours in the bush, an hour’s drive east of Mozambique’s mountainous border with Malawi. When they reached the Rio Mvire, gateway to the land of Mvire, it was almost impassable. Isolated amid one of the poorest countries in the world, the small community of believers in Mvire had guarded the faith and carried forth the tradition with little or no pastoral care. The local people claimed that before Charles visited, no missionary had ever entered this land.

During the couple of days of teaching, preaching, and tenting, a team member, Jonah, went to work on the road across the river to remove dangerous rocks and slope the banks until the river seemed relatively safe to cross.

When they returned to cross the river, Charles drove safely to the other side. Amid the dancing and singing, the other twelve walked across the river and piled into the vehicle with a live chicken—a gift for the visiting pastors. A minute later rain poured down and quickly flooded the river. Charles concluded, “I reckon God had that timed just right; otherwise we wouldn’t have made it across.”
