| The Presbytery of South Alabama was founded through the missionary efforts of Presbyterians in New York. Answering Christs call to make disciples of all people, they founded Government Street Presbyterian Church in Mobile, which celebrates its 175th anniversary in 2006. This church has remembered its roots and has founded many churches throughout South Alabama, and it had a hand in the founding of First Presbyterian Church in Pensacola, Florida.
This presbytery remembers that age to age, the Great Commission from Jesus remains the same. Its emphasis on evangelism commits its members to focus their efforts over the next five years on reaching out to make disciples of Jesus Christ. This involves helping existing churches become involved in church transformation and forming new churches. The newest church, Christ Presbyterian in Daphne, has the avowed purpose of connecting to the unchurched: those who have never been a member of a church and those who have not been church members for many years.
The churches of the presbytery continue to work as partners in mission and ministry with its sisters and brothers in Mayab Presbytery in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. South Alabama is the first presbytery to complete two water purification systems in one year through its partnership with Living Waters for the World, the synod mission project. The plan is to continue to bring clean water to mission partners in Mayab Presbytery and their communities in Mexico by completing two water systems each year.
In order to improve its efforts at making disciples here at home, South Alabama has begun a program called The Academy for Equipping the Saints. The academy will provide outstanding teaching by nationally recognized leaders in the PC(USA) for those whom churches call to become teachers of adults. Their training will focus on Scripture, theology, and teaching methods. The two-year curriculum will empower those who are called to become effective teachers to the glory of God.
Members of South Alabama were recipients of many prayers and much mission support in the aftermath of the hurricanes that hit in 2004 and 2005. For those prayers and concrete acts of caring and sharing, the presbytery will always be grateful.
The Presbytery of South Alabama serves 30 churches, 2 new church developments, and 5,660 members.
