| The Presbytery of Western Kentucky is discovering that a primary place for mission work is within the thirty-nine counties in Western Kentucky. Over the last several years the presbytery has intentionally begun to focus ministry/ mission outreach among its own churches.
In the summer of 2004 the presbyterys young people worked in five of the smallest Presbyterian churches to help them accomplish goals that they could not reach without assistance from others. The Mission Development Committee has intentionally begun to provide church revitalization workshops and information. In addition, the committee members have begun discussion about their ability to develop new churches in the growing communities in their area.
The Finance Committee has begun to work with the Synod of Living Waters to rethink its goals for training stewardship among the churches and across the presbytery. Their intent is to work toward more effective investment with a spiritual link.
The Trustees and Mission Coordinating Council are doing their part, too. In conjunction with Highland Presbyterian Church, Hopkinsville, the presbytery has finally committed to a long-term home for the presbytery office. For a number of years it has operated in a business park or in conjunction with a local business. Through the generosity and talent of its members, Highland Presbyterian has provided ministry to the presbytery through the purchase, addition, and renovation of a home.
The home, custom-built to office specifications, provides more than enough work space and meeting space for any organization affiliated with ministry, and it is accessible. The need to beg or borrow space at least quarterly for the large committee meetings is a thing of the past. Mission work happens here, too!
The Presbytery of Western Kentucky has 38 churches and 4,176 members in the westernmost counties of Kentucky.
