| National Ministries (NMD), through the General Assembly Council, advises and responds to the General Assembly on priorities, programs, and strategies for addressing matters of national concern for ministry in church and society. Under the direction of the Rev. Curtis A. Kearns, Jr., National Ministries carries out these functions by developing and implementing programs that are national in scope and expressive of the denominations mission priorities. They include the challenge of evangelism and witness, the promise of broad and encompassing ministries with racial ethnic persons and with women, the summons to a compassionate search for justice, the grounding of its work in theological and ethical discernment, the responsibility to witness in and through educational institutions, and the cultivation and nurture of volunteer and professional leadership.
These priorities are collaborative ministries, a partnership among Presbyterians throughout the church and the country. Congregations welcome strangers, act compassionately, and redress wrongs; middle governing bodies develop churches, nurture leadership, and bring people together for effective action. National Ministries supports these efforts by providing essential denominational services, supporting and promulgating General Assembly policies and practices both in the church and in the broader society, and cultivating and nurturing vital alliances within the church, the Christian community, and beyond.
Each year National Ministries attempts to say thank you to its many partners in mission here in the United States by sponsoring the Moderators Tour of Presbyterian Mission U.S.A. The General Assembly moderator visits with churches and middle governing bodies engaged in mission to express thanks for their energy, enthusiasm, and commitment. In 2005 Elder Rick Ufford-Chase, moderator of the 216th General Assembly (2004), traveled to the West Coast of the United States to visit with Presbyterians of diverse ages and backgrounds to observe a myriad of mission programs. The moderator is a visible, living, breathing symbol of the denomination, one whose presence is a valuable statement of the churchs appreciation for mission.
Thank you, Presbyterians, for your continuing contribution to the churchs mission here in the United States and around the world.
