The Synod of Living Waters
|
| The Synod of Living Waters has survived name and boundary changes and many theological differences that characterize the mid-south region, while continually supporting the mission of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). The synod reflects diverse migration patterns in the early history of the country, long before Presbyterian churches were organized in the region. Few of the Presbyterian churches in the mid-south are more than two hundred years old, and many of them were established by missionaries who came to this wilderness area from New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania.
Presbyterians in the region have a strong tradition of supporting mission throughout the world. Nashville, Tennessee, was formerly the location of the Presbyterian Church in the United States Board of World Missions. The Synod of the Mid-South, predecessor to the Synod of Living Waters, included union presbyteries before reunion of the northern and southern denominations.
Today, the synod promotes understanding among the different cultures and traditions in the PC(USA) that extend from the Gulf Coast to Appalachia and the Mississippi Delta. Through a history characterized by disagreements, many important agreements about mission have consistently prevailed.
There are 767 churches and 121,387 members in the Synod of Living Waters. Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary is located within its bounds. The synod also has a covenant relationship with Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia.
