The Presbytery of East Tennessee

The House, the Presbyterian Campus Ministry at University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, has been active in bringing the good news of Jesus Christ to the ends of the earth. In 1998, the House conducted a trip to Nicaragua in which twenty-one students participated. During spring break in 2005, following the pattern begun in 1998, fifty students visited missions and served overseas and in the United States. Teams of students worked in Bolivia, Nicaragua, the Czech Republic, and New York City in 2005. In 2004, eighty-three students and staff went on seven trips across the globe: to Belize, the Dominican Republic, New York City, San Francisco, Romania, Jamaica, and Nicaragua. The domestic trips focused on inner-city homeless ministries. The Belize trip was with Target Earth, a ministry focused on stewardship of creation. The Romanian and Jamaican trips involved care of infants and planning activities for youth at orphanages. The Nicaraguan group went to serve with Food for the Hungry, an international holistic ministry that focuses on providing food and clean water for the poorest of the poor. The members of the group in the Dominican Republic partnered with indigenous mission workers and pastors, sharing testimony and stories of faith through baseball clinics for children.

The House has also begun a summer mission program called Beyond Boundaries. Over the last three summers, fifteen students have spent eight to ten weeks overseas working with mission workers in the field in Malawi, Bolivia, Indonesia, India, Macedonia, and Albania.

These short-term mission trips serve to foster community among students, especially those new to the ministry, and encourage students to see their lives as having purpose in the realm of God as they discover gifts, passions, and abilities.

The Presbytery of East Tennessee has 78 member churches serving 16,187 Presbyterians. Knoxville College and Maryville College are located within its bounds.
