The Presbytery of St. Andrew

From the rolling hills in the northeast to the Mississippi Delta cotton fields in the west, the 6,578 Presbyterians in northern Mississippi continue to spread the good news of Jesus Christ through the ministries of their 70 congregations, as do the ministries and programs of the Presbytery of St. Andrew.

A major emphasis for the coming year will be on making preparations for a new church development (NCD). In 2005, the presbytery’s NCD committee continued its planning process, and fund-raising for the project is expected to occur over the next twelve months.

Camp Hopewell, owned and operated by the Presbytery of St. Andrew, is a fully accredited, year-round camp and conference center that has experienced significant growth in recent years. A new office building and maintenance barn were completed in 2005, and with the arrival of a new camp director, assessment of the existing development plan will lead to exciting new ventures in the months ahead.

Living Waters for the World, a mission of the Synod of Living Waters, continues to expand use of the Hopewell facility, which is home to its training facility, Clean Water U. There, individuals, church groups, and other organizations learn to install small-batch (300-gallon) water purification units. These units are being installed in an increasing number of locations throughout the world, and are ideal for settings where clean water is not readily available. At the training facility, water is pumped to the purification area from the camp’s lake, and groups learn to assemble the purification units in a building specifically designed for that purpose. The number of Clean Water U sessions has expanded each year since its inception in 2004.

The Presbytery of St. Andrew is a partner in ministry with the Presbytery of Ntem, Cameroon, where American Presbyterian mission work has a historic presence—particularly at the Elat missionary station near Ebolowa, Cameroon. Although partnership activities were suspended in 2002 as a result of turmoil in the Cameroon Presbyterian Church, the Presbytery of St. Andrew remains hopeful about the future of joint mission efforts.
