The 2023 Moderators’ Conference will be hosted by Shavon Starling-Louis and Ruth Faith Santana-Grace, along with the Office of the General Assembly, November 9–11 at the Presbyterian Center in Louisville. Synods and presbyteries are encouraged to send their moderator, vice moderator, and/or moderator-elect so that they can benefit from preparing for their term of service with peers from across the denomination. The Co-Moderators of the 225th GA (2022) have set the theme “Unbounded We Thrive.” Registrants can expect worship, a variety of workshops, and an introduction to practical skills such as parliamentary procedure and other aspects of leading meetings.

For those who cannot travel, there is an online option. The in-person fee is $150 (Includes the opening reception, Friday lunch, Friday dinner, and Saturday lunch, all provided at the Presbyterian Center), and online is $75. The participant’s mid council is also responsible for travel and hotel expenses and meals when not at the conference site.

The event begins Thursday evening with a welcome reception from 5:30–7:30 and concludes by 6:00 p.m. Saturday, so participants should plan to travel on Thursday and Sunday. The deadline to register will be October 10, and this is also the cutoff date to reserve a hotel room at a conference rate. Know that there is a popular concert Saturday evening right next door, so space is expected to fill up quickly.

The schedule includes:

  • Worship in the Chapel of the Presbyterian Center (also live-streamed)
  • Plenaries including: the purpose of a presbytery/synod; roles of a moderator; parliamentary procedure and other discernment processes; purposeful meetings; what it means to be a Matthew 25 presbytery/synod; unbounding spiritual identity as we lead others.  All plenaries will be accessible to online participants.
  • Three sessions of workshops on a variety of topics, with at least one workshop in each session accessible to online participants.  Attendees will make workshop selections as they register to help determine whether and how each is offered.
  • Conversation with co-moderators Ruth Santana-Grace and Shavon Starling-Louis.
