There is much you can do to promote your health and decrease your risk
of developing many health problems as you age. So what checkups should you have, and how frequently should you have them?

Your schedule depends on your health circumstances and your healthcare provider's recommendations, but use this chart as a general guide for women over 50. In addition to your general physical examination, which is usually every two to three years, the following are recommended:

  Breast examination   The first day of each month or after your period  
       
  Skin self-examination   Every 3 months or more often  
       
  Clinical breast examination   Annually  
       
  Pelvic examination and Pap test   Annually  
       
  Mammography   Annually  
       
  Height and weight   Annually  
       
  Blood pressure   Annually  
       
  Fecal occult blood   Annually  
       
  Dental examination   Annually  
       
  Eye examination   Every 2 years (glaucoma screening) or as directed  
       
  Cholesterol   Every 3 to 5 years  
       
  Blood sugar (glucose)   Every 3 to 5 years  
       
  Sigmoidoscopy   Every 3 to 5 years  
       
  Electrocardiogram   Baseline and as directed  
       
  Bone density   As directed  
       
  Hearing examination   As directed  
       
  Clinical skin examination   As directed  
       
  Influenza vaccination   Annually  
       
  Penumococcal   Once, usually around immunization age 65  
       
  Tetanus shot   Every 10 years
