Hold a "Blessing of the Hands" service

A "Blessing of the Hands" service honoring nurses can be held during the beginning of May — to coincide with National Nurses Week (May 6–12) — or at other times during the year. Congregations have used this date as an opportunity to lift up people who are members of their congregations, parish or faith community nurses who work with their congregations and others in their community who have devoted their lives in service to others through nursing.

Graphic: Blessing of the hands honoring nurses - National Nurses Week - May 6-12Services that ask God’s blessing on nurses typically utilize a Blessing of the Hands because touch is such an integral part of the work of nurses and health professionals. The National Health Ministries office has compiled the following resources which contain sample services that can be used as part of a regular service, as a brief special service or as a short service that could be held at a local hospital or health care facility. These samples are written by a number of different individuals representing several organizations who have graciously allowed them to be collected as part of this resource.  Each is noted with their contribution.

Use these "Blessing of the Hands" resources in planning your service

While this service resource is designed for use during National Nurses Week, and to honor nurses, these services may be held at any time during the year and with slight changes in terms can be used to include health care providers of all types.
