In selecting a parish nurse for a particular congregation there are many factors that need to be taken into consideration. The basic requirement is that the nurse has a current license to practice nursing as a registered professional nurse in the state of the congregation that is to be served. Other issues for consideration are the nurses basic educational preparation, nursing experience, educational preparation in parish nursing and current goals.

Most important however, is the nurse themselves, their faith journey, personal spirituality, values, experience of working in congregation and their compatibility with the congregation under consideration as well as the pastor of the congregation.
