  Let's Get Moving!
A Walking Program for Congregations

Presbyterians, like many of our colleagues and neighbors, tend to live rather sedentary lives. We often sit behind desks or around committee tables exercising our minds, but not our bodies. This lifestyle, combined with a life-long opportunity to eat as often and as much as we like, can contribute to our individual "girth" and place us at increased risk for cardiovascular events and diabetes.

Walking programs are an ideal way for congregations to focus on an opportunity for individual Presbyterians to practice good stewardship of our own bodies and health, collectively. Many congregations are already using walking as an activity and some have formal walking programs in place. Let's Get Moving is an option for those who wish to have a more formalized program. Congregational Health Ministry Survey

As congregations begin to develop a health ministry, a systematic look at the needs of the congregation is always helpful. The Congregational Health Ministry Survey is designed to: 1) identify the health needs and interests of members; 2) introduce new ideas about health and wholeness; 3) discern the church's present health ministries; and 4) discover resources for any additional health ministry actions your congregation may consider.

Download the survey in a printable Adobe Acrobat format. To view the files, you will need the free Adobe Acrobat Reader.
For best results, right-click the link (or click and hold for Macintosh), select "save target as" and save the document to your desktop for viewing and printing.

Financial Support for Congregations and Middle Governing Bodies

Financial support for health ministry programs in the form of small grants is available. The principle emphasis for proposals solicited for funding for 2003 will be congregational care team ministry development and support.

Congregational care teams, for the purpose of these grants will be defined as service based programs, utilizing volunteers and working in concert with pastors, parish nurses, health ministry programs or with community interfaith groups, who provide services which sustain, support, or enhance the ability of others to live independently, and to improve their overall quality of life. Congregational care team ministries may focus on members of the congregation sponsoring the care team or on other members of the community. Applications for grants to support parish nursing projects will also be accepted if they show a relationship to a congregational care team or a care team component.

  Health-mission focused church
Webster Presbyterian Church, Webster, New York

Mission work has long been a primary objective of Webster Presbyterian Church. Whether giving monetary support, physical assistance, sharing of goods and services through community based projects like Habitat for Humanity and food collection, or spiritual support, members are continually giving of their time and talent.

One of their special mission projects has been the development of an Extra Commitment Opportunity (ECO), Health Ministries in Medically Underserved Areas, established through National Health Ministries. Through this ECO, they intend to partner with and provide funds to help defray the cost of providing health services, a health ministry or a parish nursing program to another Presbyterian congregation in a community that is medically underserved.

Specifically, this mission project will provide grant funds to churches in medically underserved areas of the United States to develop "hands-on" programs for children and adults. Programs will include mobile health services, screening and health risk education interventions for children and their parents. Congregations may serve their own membership and/or the larger community in which the church is located and will be encouraged to work collaboratively with public health services in reaching those most in need.
