Remembering the Florida Hurricanes of 2004

Many churches in Florida, affected by the hurricanes of this past summer, continue to make a slow recovery. Church leaders and members are struggling with personal reconstruction while they are overseeing the rebuilding of their churches. The hurricanes damaged and destroyed buildings and property, but for some churches, housing shortages have also interrupted the sense of community. Many people are still residing in temporary housing – sometimes miles from their home community.   Florida storm damage

Others, who are seasonal members of congregations, have been prevented from making the “snowbird” flight because housing is not available.

While the crisis created by the more recent Tsunami has rightly engaged our attention, we need to continue to remember those affected by the hurricanes of Summer. National Health Ministries maintains contact with folks from several of the churches and will be happy to pass along contact information, if you would like to offer words of encouragement, prayers or support.

If you would like to participate in this long-distance ministry of health, send an e-mail to health@ctr.pcusa.org and ask for the contact information for the Florida churches.
