Additional Information: This is a service-learning program
where participants learn about urban ministry through hands
on service as well as presentations from people active in urban
ministry. There are also morning devotions and evening theological
discussions led by the program leaders to connect the day's

weekend programs available.

Project Provides: Rooms with mattresses; cooking and

Nature of Work: Volunteers will work for a variety of service
organizations in the Harrisburg-Carlisle area. Older volunteers
(16 and over) may be able to work at Habitat for Humanity of
the Greater Harrisburg Area. Younger volunteers will work at
other social service organizations.
Group Specifications: Maximum group size: 15 people;
Adult/youth ratio: 1/5 or 1/6.
Project Provides: Arrangements for work sites and directions
to sites. Housing in our Youth Center, with a kitchen, two showers
and bathrooms (other bathrooms without showers, available in
the church itself). Modest supply of cooking pans, silverware,
and plates. Group must provide own transportation, do own food
preparation, and provide adult supervision at the different
work sites.
Additional Information: Donations are requested for the
use of the Youth Center (suggested minimum of $50 for a full
week), and to the organization where the groups will be working.
Mechanicsburg is near Harris burg, the state capital of Pennsylvania,
and approximately 20 miles from Hershey Park and 30 miles from

Food Pantry providing one week's worth of food to more than
500 families per month.
Group Specifications: Young adults up to any age are
accepted year-round. Groups between 10-15 people maximum.
Additional Information: In addition to our core services,
Northside Common Ministries provides access to emergency healthcare
through "Healthcare for the Homeless" and through
Mercy Behavioral Health Services as well as serving our community's
needs by providing access to Healthy Start and Duquesne Light's

The
Pittsburgh Project

Nature of Work: We engage groups in urban short-term
mission experiences, including relational ministry to in-need
homeowners, hands-on home repair in any of 35 Pittsburgh neighborhoods,
and vibrant worship connecting discipleship and service. We
make it easy for groups and their leaders! We provide meals,
lodging, construction materials, and tools. We establish contact
with homeowners, set up the work sites ahead of time, and provide
technical guidance on site. Our staff members train participants
in safety guidelines and lead nightly worship. Since we take
responsibility for all programming, you’re free to pursue
relationships within your group while we handle logistics. All
you need to provide are vehicles and adult (21+) work site leaders!
Group Specifications: Group size: 2-80; minimum age:
we offer trips for junior high students, senior high students,
adults, collegians, and families; costs: Trips range from one-day
retreats ($20/person) to weekend retreats ($75/person), to week-long

Nature of Work: Sojourner House provides two programs:
a "women with Children" drug and alcohol residential
treatment center, and MOMS (permanent supported housing for
mentally ill/substance abusing mothers). Opportunities exist
for interacting with the youngsters and their families (e.g.,
providing recreation events. craft/hobby projects) or to help
with facility maintenance (e.g. yard maintenance, apartment
painting). Projects will be tailored to the age and interests
of the volunteers and to the amount of adult supervision provided.
Group Specifications: Up to 15 in a group. Minimum age
is 12. We ask that the volunteers subsidize any crafts or recreational
activities or contribute to the cost of the project (if possible,
and as determined by prior discussion).
Project Provides: Orientation will be held to discuss
issues related to addiction. We can assist the volunteers to
locate affordable overnight arrangements and meals. Pittsburgh
offers excellent sight-seeing, recreational and cultural opportunities.

Nature of Work: HARVEST OF HOPE is a mission event focused
on gleaning food for the hungry. In addition to gleaning each
morning, we learn about hunger and poverty in small and large
group sessions and enjoy ecumenical Christian worship twice
a day. Intergenerational weekends, College & Young Adult
weekends, Junior High weekends, and Senior High weeklong events
take place throughout the year in 6 states. THE GLEANING NETWORK
hosts day-long gleaning events for church and civic groups in
22 states year-round. THE POTATO PROJECT transports truck loads
of salvaged produce to hundreds of agencies. Your group can
become involved by sponsoring a truck load or having a "potato
drop" event at your church.

Service Project

Nature of Work: ASP is a Christian ministry open to all
people that fosters human development by addressing the housing
needs of Central Appalachia. Urgently needed home repairs are
provided free of charge to families and individuals in need
through volunteers who come to serve. ASP's goal is to make
homes warmer, safer, and drier while meeting people right where
they are and just the way they are. Volunteers often have transformational
experiences while assisting these families. Work projects include
roof, window, floor, wall repairs, weatherization, room additions,
and more.
Group Specifications: Accepting groups June through August
— eight week summer home repair program in 25 locations
in Central Appalachian Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia, and
West Virginia; accommodations are mostly schools or similar
facilities. Groups pay fees and come for one week of service.
A work crew usually includes five teens and two adults. September
through May — groups and individuals volunteer on more
flexible schedules as ASP's year-round Housing Services Centers
in Chavies, Kentucky, Jonesville, Virginia or Johnson City,
Tennessee. Scheduling and programming customized for group.
Project Provides: Scheduling and information assistance;
preparation process materials and coordination; meals and lodging;
programming; project selection, planning and oversight; basic
tools and building materials.
Additional Information: Summer program is primarily for
high school age youth (14 and up) and their accompanying adult
volunteers. Application deadline: November 1 for the following
summer. Non-summer program is more adult-oriented (college-age
through retirees). Applications accepted any time. Bring bedding.

Additional Information: Each location has opportunities for playing of various sports, such as volleyball or football. Groups can possibly interact with the people they will serve. Possible opportunities to visit local parks, lakes, museums and mountains.
