Department of the Stated Clerk

The Stated Clerk of the General Assembly is the Chief Executive of the Office of the General Assembly. This department

  • manages Stated Clerk's correspondence and travel schedule
  • provides staff services to the Committee on the Office of the General Assembly
  • provides personnel management for the Office of the General Assembly
  • manages the budget for the Office of the General Assembly

Department of Ecumenical and Agency Relationships

Coordinates the Office of the General Assembly's and the Stated Clerk's ecumenical responsibilities. Relates to the following ecumenical bodies such as

  • World Council of Churches
  • National Council of Churches of Christ in the U.S.A.
  • World Alliance of Reformed Churches and its Caribbean and North American Area Council
  • Churches in Christian Unity

This office also:

  • arranges for Moderatorial visits to governing bodies and manages Moderatorial services
  • staffs the Committee on Representation
  • staffs the General Assembly Nominating Committee
  • provides a liason for OGA to the agencies of the General Assembly
  • jointly funds with the General Assembly Council, the Office of Governing Body Relations

Constitutional Services

Concentrating on issues of church polity, this department:

  • resources the development of the Book of Order
  • responds to inquires about the interpretation of the Constitution of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)
  • maintains the judicial and legislative services required by the Constitution
  • provides staff services to:
    • Advisory Committee on the Constitution
    • Advisory Committee on Litigation
    • Permanent Judicial Commission of the General Assembly
    • Form of Government Task Force

GA Meeting Service

To provide for meetings of the General Assembly, this department:

  • provides for training of commissioners, advisory delegates, and assembly committee leadership
  • manages a system to ensure an orderly flow of business before, during, and after the assembly
  • partners with the host presbytery and others to provide worship and hospitality during the assembly
  • coordinates housing, registration, transportation, and other details related to the assembly
  • conducts on-site inspections of cities for future General Assemblies
  • provides planning and registration services for other PC(USA) events

Department of Communication, Development, and Technology

The Department of Communication, Development, and Technology provides support for the Stated Clerk and the Office of the General Assembly. This office

  • publishes, markets and distributes documents for the Office of the General Assembly
  • explores new technology to improve communication
  • maintains OGA Web sites
  • supports PC-Biz
  • maintains databases of ministers and churches
  • translates OGA documents into Spanish, Korean, Taiwanese, Portuguese, Braille, and Large Print

Department of History (Presbyterian Historical Society)

The Department of History is the church's national archives and historical research center, with offices in Philadelphia, Pa., and Louisville, Ky. This award-winning program

  • assists national-level staff with their records through file management, vital records protection, records scheduling, and temporary records storage
  • archives, collects, preserves, and provides access to manuscript records of General Assembly agencies and governing bodies, as well as the papers of prominent Presbyterians
  • maintains the foremost research collections documenting Presbyterian heritage in the United States and the worldwide activities of American Presbyterians, with materials dating from the eighteenth century to the present

Office of Vocation

The Office of Vocation is a shared ministry of the General Assembly Council and the Office of the General Assembly, whose purpose is to provide ecclesiastical and programming support related to vocation and leadership for Presbyterian individuals, congregations, governing bodies, and other partners including

  • Christian Vocation, Presbyterian Leadership Search Effort (PLSE)
  • Certification of Christian Educators
  • Preparation for Ministry process—training, consultation resources for presbytery committees on preparation for ministry
  • Assessment of readiness for ministry—ordination exams
  • Ministry Support—training, consultation resources for presbytery committees on ministry
  • Orderly Exchange of Ministers (Formula of Agreement)
  • Commissioned Lay Pastors—guidance and resources for presbyteries
  • PC(USA) Call System/Church Leadership Connection
  • Guidance on congregational personnel issues, lay professionals
  • Endorsement and care of military chaplains through the Presbyterian Council for Chaplains and Military Personnel

Office of Governing Body Relations

The Office of Governing Body Relations provides leadership in developing, evaluating, and fostering networks, initiatives, and relationships between presbyteries, synods, and General Assembly agencies. It is a connecting point for supporting the work of middle governing body leadership at the General Assembly level.
