Welcome to the October issue of Perspectives, the monthly online magazine published by the Office of the General Assembly (OGA). Perspectives is designed for readers who want to look at the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) at a level deeper than news reports. The magazine explores issues facing the church through the lens of scripture, our Reformed theology, and a constitutional and confessional framework. It offers some reflective analysis on our life together as the PC(USA). This month's issue features a compelling article by the Rev. Dr. Fahed Abu-Akel, Moderator of the 214th General Assembly (2002). Having experienced firsthand being a refugee as a Palestinian child, the Moderator offers a unique perspective on the current situation with Iraq. "Much Has Already Been Lost" is the title of the first chapter of Virginia Rainey's sesquicentennial history of the Presbyterian Historical Society, Stewards of Our Heritage: A History of the Presbyterian Historical Society. We present here an excerpt from the first chapter that details the struggle faced by the founders of the Presbyterian Historical Society to collect and preserve the records of our Presbyterian history. Today, the challenge to collect and preserve electronic records instead of the more traditional paper trail, as described in this excerpt, suggests both how things have changed, but remain the same. For more information about the Presbyterian Historical Society or how to purchase Stewards of Our History, please visit the Presbyterian Historical Society Web site at www.history.pcusa.org. Earlier this summer, Loyda Aja, Director of the Office of the Stated Clerk, made a presentation to a gathering of Hispanic pastors. Several people have requested a copy of her presentation. Similar to "Assembly in Brief," Loyda's remarks are provided here - in Spanish. Finally, the first of new bi-monthly (every other month) columns by the Stated Clerk of the General Assembly and the Moderator of the 214th General Assembly round out this issue of Perspectives. Both offer their reflections on the Assembly in Columbus. We are always interested
and eager for your feedback. We would especially like to know what you
would like to see in future issues of Perspectives. Send your
comments to OGA_Communications@ctr.pcusa.org.
