| Catherine Carpenter,
54, a former editor for the Presbyterian Publishing Corporation
and the eldest daughter of renowned Presbyterian mission interpreter
Marj Carpenter, died on Jan. 24 in a nursing home in Big Spring,
TX.
She had suffered from diabetes for more than 24 years and endured
10 trips to various intensive-care units. She apparently died
of a heart attack.
Carpenter spent most of her adult life in the publishing business
in London, Philadelphia, Houston and Louisville. She also taught
modern English literature in universities in England and Wales.
Services are scheduled for Jan. 28 in Big Spring. In addition
to her mother, Catherine Carpenter is survived by a sister, Carolyn
Stewart; a brother, Jim Bob; two nephews and a niece.
Memorial gifts may be given to the Faith Factor Fund (ECO #051790),
which was established by the General Assembly to rebuild the PC(USA)’s
international missionary or to the music fund of First Presbyterian

The Rev. Barry Ensign George has been called as an associate
for theology in the Theology, Worship and Discipleship program
area of the Congregational Ministries Division.
He will serve as project manager for a major initiative —
“Re Forming Ministry,” a program supported by a $1.97
million grant from the Lilly Endowment Inc. that will draw together
groups of pastors, theology professors and church officials for
five years of intensive theological work on ecclesiology.
A graduate of the University of Washington and Princeton Theological
Seminary, Ensign-George is a former parish pastor in East Iowa
Presbytery. He also is a Ph.D. candidate at Southern Methodist
University. He began his new work on Jan.12.

The Rev. Philip C. Brown, executive presbyter of Milwaukee
Presbytery since 1996, has been elected synod executive for the
Synod of Lakes and Prairies.
Brown, a third-generation Presbyterian minister, served pastorates
in Denver and Springfield, IL, before becoming associate executive
presbyter and then executive presbyter of Great Rivers Presbytery
in 1978.
