LOUISVILLE — The Presbyterian Historical Society (PHS) has announced the eight winners of its annual awards and grants for historical publishing and records preservation.
The winners of the 2003 Francis Makemie Award for outstanding books about American Presbyterian or Reformed history are Bonnie Sue Lewis, for Creating Christian Indians: Native Clergy in the Presbyterian Church (University of Oklahoma Press, 2003); and Rick Nutt. for Many Lamps, One Light: Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, a 150th Anniversary History (Eeerdmans, 2002).
The 2003 Robert Lee Stowe Award, for a historical study of an American Presbyterian or Reformed congregation, was won by Valley Creek Presbyterian Church in Selma, AL, for Valley Creek Presbyterian Church: Her Life and Times, 1817-2000, by Estelle McCarthy (privately published, 2002).
Three churches received Heritage Microfilming Grants to help pay for the preservation of historical records: Sherwood Presbyterian Church in Columbus, GA; Portland Avenue Presbyterian Church in Louisville; and First Presbyterian Church in Skagway, AK.
Representatives of two churches received inaugural William Black Lodge Scholarships to attend PHS’ annual Local Church History Seminar: Sherwood Presbyterian in Columbus and Bethesda Presbyterian Church in Statesville, NC.
