Editor’s note:David Young, a staff photographer for the General Assembly Council’s Office of Communication, recently accompanied a delegation of Presbyterians — including GAC Executive Director John Detterick and the Rev. Clifton Kirkpatrick, stated clerk of the General Assembly — that visited the Middle East.
During the visit, the group witnessed construction of the wall Israel is erecting between its territory and occupied Palestine. Young, a frequent visitor to the Middle East, produced a photo essay with accompanying scripture passages.
“I realized later that I never physically touched the wall,” he said. “I also realized that I’ve also created an inner wall inside myself as a result of this experience, because I can’t cope with the emotion of it. It was overwhelming.”
Young said he hopes his photographs “will help people begin to think about the neighbor, the other, and why we tend to think of them as less than human, as enemies rather than as fellow human beings.”— Jerry L. Van Marter
