| LOUISVILLE — Three women who have lived out their Christian vocation in the field of science, technology and engineering have been named winners of the Presbyterian Church (USA) 2004 Women of Faith Awards.
The three are Christine Mann Darden, an aerospace engineer with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in Hampton, VA; Rogene F. Henderson, a toxicologist at the Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute in Albuquerque; and Ruth Rivera Lane, a biochemist who is CEO of All Out Marketing, Inc. in Shorewood, MN.
The awards will be presented by the Women’s Ministries Program Area of the National Ministries Division at the annual Women of Faith Awards Breakfast on June 27 during the 216th General Assembly in Richmond, VA.
Darden, an elder at Carver Presbyterian Church in Newport News, VA, has been with NASA for 34 years. She has become an international expert in supersonic aerodynamics and sonic boom minimization, authoring more than 50 technical papers and articles.
In the church, Darden has been active in her congregation and presbytery, served as moderator of the Synod of the Mid-Atlantic and was vice-moderator of the General Assembly’s Committee on Representation.
Henderson is a senior scientist at the non-profit Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute, where she has been instrumental in developing biomarkers of respiratory diseases, which are used to demonstrate human exposure to airborne pollutants. She has published more than 200 articles on the subject.
Henderson, a PC(USA) elder, has served four terms on the session of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Albuquerque. She has been a commissioner to her presbytery, served on the National Ghost Ranch Foundation board and received an award in 2001 from the Presbyterian Association on Science, Technology and the Christian Faith.
Lane founded All Out Marketing, Inc., which specializes in bringing scientific discoveries to the medical community for practical use. Her recent work has been in the area of pain management through neuropathic stimulation, which has particularly affected heart valve and breast cancer treatments.
A native of Puerto Rico, Lane is the daughter of a Presbyterian minister who has lived all over the United States and Panama. She’s an elder at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Minneapolis
