In her “Up Front” column in PT, Stimson writes from a progressive theological perspective about issues of importance to the PC(USA) and to the broader Christian community.
The annual Steele award, named for one of the guild’s most beloved past members, recognizes a Presbyterian writer for work done over an extended period of time. The winner also receives $1,000. The award will be presented to Stimson at the guild’s annual General Assembly luncheon on July 1.
“I feel very honored, and humbled,” Stimson said. “I know there are lots of other good Presbyterian writers out there, so I’m touched that they chose me.”
Stimson, 51, was born in Rock Hill, SC. An accomplished painter, she earned a bachelor’s degree in art from Presbyterian-related Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, VA. She also has a master’s degree in Christian Education from the Presbyterian School of Christian Education in Richmond, VA, and a master’s in English from Georgia State University in Atlanta.
Stimson is married to the Rev. Jerry L. Van Marter, coordinator of the Presbyterian News Service. They are the parents of 12-year-old twins, Luke and Rachel. Stimson and Van Marter are Sunday school teachers at Crescent Hill Presbyterian Church in Louisville, where Stimson is an elder.
The Rev. R. David Steele died in August 2001 at age 70, shortly after the writers guild renamed its Distinguished Writer Award in his honor.
