Committee leadership set for the 216th General Assembly

LOUISVILLE — The leadership for the 13 committees that will take up the business of the 216th General Assembly (2004) of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) has been named.

      The Standing Rules of the General Assembly direct that the moderator of the previous General Assembly will appoint the committee leadership for the next assembly. The Rev. Susan R. Andrews, moderator of the 215th General Assembly (2003) made this year’s appointments.

      The committee leadership is drawn from the commissioners who have been elected to the assembly by their presbyteries. Each committee will be led by a moderator and vice-moderator. In addition, each committee will have an assembly assistant who supports the committee’s work, and a parliamentarian/recorder.

      The Standing Rules require that the moderator consult with the Committee on the Office of the General Assembly and the General Assembly Committee on Representation in making the leadership appointments. The rules also provide directives for the committee leadership, which ensure clergy and elder parity, male and female balance, and geographical diversity.
