"I invite every one of our churches to support WARC and one another in points of needs; to be a community that truly covenants [comes together in response to God's call] for justice in the economy and the earth; to be a community that works in our churches all over the world for gender justice, for full participation of youth in all our activities," he said.
Kirkpatrick has been the stated clerk or chief executive of the general assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the United States since 1996. He has previously been director of his church's Worldwide Ministries Division, Global Mission Ministry Unit, and Division of International Mission, General Assembly Mission Board. His formal education includes a Master of Divinity degree from Yale University (1968) and a Doctor of Ministry degree from McCormick Theological Seminary (1981).
Kirkpatrick also serves with the US National Council of Churches, the World Council of Churches' executive and central committees, and was a member of WARC's outgoing executive committee. He is a president of the US section of the World Conference of Religions for Peace and president of the National Interreligious Initiative for Peace in the Middle East. With William Hopper, he co-authored "What Unites Presbyterians: Common Ground for Troubled Times".
The vice-presidents on the new WARC executive committee are: Professor Lilia Rafalimanana (Madagascar), Dr Henriette Hutabarat-Lebang (Indonesia), Dr Ofelia Ortega (Cuba), Dr Gottfried Locher (Switzerland), Helis Hernan Barraza Diaz (Colombia) and Marcelle Joy Mafi (New Zealand).
