WJK books win two top awards 

Volumes by Coffin, Brueggemann take theological booksellers honors

LOUISVILLE — Westminster John Knox (WJK) Press books by William Sloane Coffin and Walter Brueggemann won the two top awards of the Association of Theological Booksellers at an awards ceremony Nov. 20 in San Antonio, TX.

      Coffin’s book Credo was named Book of the Year and Brueggemann’s An Introduction to the Old Testament: The Canon and Christian Imagination was honored as the Best Academic Book of 2004. The ceremony was held during the annual meetings of the American Academy of Religion and the Society of Biblical Literature.

      “We’re very honored that booksellers have recognized us with these awards,” said Jack Keller, vice-president of publishing for WJK, an imprint of the Presbyterian Publishing Corporation (PPC). “We think this shows both the depth and breadth of the quality of our publishing program.”

      Credo is a collection of Coffin’s words — taken from speeches, sermons and lectures — on issues ranging from charity, justice, politics and the environment to morality and the meaning of faith.

      In An Introduction to the Old Testament Brueggemann — one of the foremost Old Testament scholars in the world — takes readers on a chronological journey through each book of the Old Testament, introducing broad theological themes and employing a variety of interpretive tools — literary, historical and theological.
