Stated clerk sends condolence letter
to PC(USA) partner churches in Britain

LOUISVILLE — The Rev. Clifton Kirkpatrick, stated clerk of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), sent a letter of condolence to the PC(USA)’s partner churches in England on July 7, as news reached the United States of a series of terrorist attacks in London that killed more than 50 people and left hundreds injured.

     Kirkpatrick’s letter went to the United Reformed Church, the Church of England, the Baptist Union of Great Britain, the Church of Scotland and Churches Together in Britain and Ireland.

     The full text:

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

It is with horror and deep sadness that we have learned of and followed the news of the bombings in London today. That innocent civilians continue to be targeted in London and other places around the world is an outrage beyond description.

On behalf of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), I want you to know of our heartfelt prayers and concern for the victims of these attacks and their families, as well as for all the citizens of London who are in the aftermath of such terror. We are also remembering you in our prayers as you minister directly to the many needs arising from the situation. May you draw comfort from the words of the Psalmist, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Ps. 46:1).

More than ever, we are committed to working with you and the world community in overcoming the causes of this kind of violence, wherever it manifests itself.

May the peace of Christ, which passes all understanding, be yours this day and in the days ahead.
