W. Mark Koenig
The Rev. W. Mark Koenig has been called as the coordinator of the Presbyterian Peacemaking Program. He succeeds Sara Lisherness, who became director of the PC(USA) General Assembly Council’s Peace and Justice program area.
Koenig joined the staff of the Presbyterian Peacemaking Program in 2002 as associate for resources and publications. He also travels extensively, visiting many presbyteries and congregations, preaching and facilitating workshops on a variety of subjects related to peacemaking.
Koenig was formerly the GAC’s associate for anti-racism training. He also served pastorates in Ohio and Iowa, and was staff associate for peace and justice ministries in the Presbytery of the Western Reserve for 11 years.

Presbyterians for Restoring Creation — a nationwide network that responds to the call of the PC(USA) to care for God’s creation — has named the Rev. Renee Marie Rico as its new national coordinator. She begins her new work June 1.
Rico succeeds Rebecca Barnes-Davies who was the network’s first coordinator from 2001-2007 and who will attend Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary in the fall. She has more than 14 years of experience working in environmental issues and eight years in pastoral ministry.
From 1980 to 1994, Rico was the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s deputy director and branch chief of the Acid Rain Division, in addition to working as a program analyst in water, toxic chemical and air programs. She has served on the steering committee of Presbyterians for Restoring Creation since 2003.

 Calvin the dog
Calvin the Dog, author of Unleashed: The Wit and Wisdom of Calvin the Dog,
died May 3 at the age of 13. Calvin’s book of canine philosophy was published by Westminster John Knox Press in 1998 and sold nearly 10,000 copies nationwide.
Calvin was the first canine allowed on the floor of the nation’s largest book convention — Book Expo in Chicago — when Westminster John Knox flew him and his translater, Chris Glaser, there for a booksigning. Calvin also handed out “pawtographs” at the PC(USA) General Assembly after the release of Unleashed.
Calvin, a golden retriever-Labrador native of Atlanta, died in San Francisco, where Glaser is currently working. He is also survived by Hobbes, a golden retriever-Labrador mix.

Edna Palmer
The U.S. Conference of the World Council of Churches paused during its recent annual meeting to celebrate the 90th birthday of Edna Palmer, a life-long contributor to the global ecumenical movement and a member of Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York City.
Tributes were paid to Palmer’s contributions to the ecumenical movement by, among others, WCC General Secretary Samuel Kobia and the Rev. Clifton Kirkpatrick, General Assembly stated clerk of the PC(USA). |
