Clarification
LOUISVILLE — The Presbyterian News Service received the following email message from the Rev. Mark Lomax, who spoke to the General Assembly Council’s Vocation Ministry Committee here last week about African American Presbyterian leadership development:
Jerry Van Marter’s story maintains the essence of my comments but I think it is important to note that the real point I was making is that potential African American leaders in the Church come from a particular historical, social, political, and economic context that is rarely acknowledged and even more rarely affirmed in any way. While the Presbyterian Church has done a lot to demonstrate its commitment to African American Presbyterians we should not allow that historical investment slip as we seek to evangelize other communities, i.e., new immigrants and multi-cultural.
