Princeton seminary honors WARC’s Nyomi

by Ecumenical News International

PRINCETON, NJ — The church needs leaders who are courageous enough to act on their faith and commitment to God, the general secretary of the World Alliance of Reformed Churches (WARC) said as he was honored by Princeton Theological Seminary here this week.

“The church of the 21st century needs effective leaders at every level — congregational, regional, national and global — who are ready to invest in life,” the Rev. Setri Nyomi said in an Oct. 24 address at a reunion during which he was honored as the institution's 2008 Distinguished Alumnus.

In his address, Nyomi said the seminary had equipped him and many others for the challenges faced by the world today. Many of these challenges are rooted in the way the global economy is arranged, he added.

“Today the calling to stand up to evil and to expose the forces of death in different parts of the world are even more complex,” the WARC general secretary said.

The Geneva-based WARC groups 75 million Reformed Christians in 214 Congregational, Presbyterian, Reformed and United churches in 107 countries.

Nyomi earned his doctorate in pastoral theology from the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)-related seminary in 1991, and is an ordained minister of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Ghana. He has served as a parish pastor in Ghana and the United States.

He joined the global Reformed alliance in 2000 after working at the Nairobi-based All Africa Conference of Churches in a number of executive capacities.

Nyomi thanked Princeton Theological Seminary for its role in shaping WARC’s member churches. He noted that the school has produced three of WARC’s past presidents, hosted the organization’s 1954 General Council and helped convene the first forum of Reformed theological institutions from around the world.
