LOUISVILLE — Five days after he died suddenly of a massive heart attack at age 42, Presbyterian News Service senior reporter Evan Silverstein continues to be mourned by colleagues and journalists around the country.

Here in his hometown, Silverstein, who died at his home Nov. 9, was praised by Louisville Courier-Journal religion reporter Peter Smith, who wrote a tribute on his blog — excerpted on the front page of the newspaper — saying, “We shared the goal of reporting thoroughly and fairly about of all sides of the issues.” The complete tribute can be found on their Web site.

In Dallas, Dallas Morning News religion reporter Sam Hodges said, “We join his colleagues in mourning his passing in the prime of a valuable career.” Hodges's complete blog post can be found here.

Lucas Benitez, co-founder and leader of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, said in a note forwarded to PNS by the Rev. Noelle Damico, the PC(USA)s liaison with the coalition: “I can imagine how you are feeling the loss of our friend. We are also much affected by the death of Evan, who was one of the best reporters and allies we have had in the Presbyterian Church. Please extend my sincerest sympathy to his family and friends, and our greatest wishes that we might overcome this loss.” (translation from Spanish by Eva Stimson)

An Evan Silverstein Memorial Fund has been established through PC(USA) Extra Commitment Opportunity giving. All contributions to the memorial fund will be sent to the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, an organization working to improve wages and working conditions and to stop human slavery in Florida’s agricultural fields.
