The Synod of South Atlantic
|
| All sixteen of the presbyteries in the Synod of South Atlantic are fully staffed with permanent executive leadership. Eight leadership positions have been filled over the last four years. This administrative synod is seeking to strengthen its ties with the presbyteries, councils, sessions, and agencies within its boundaries. Once a year the Synod Council meets away from its offices in Jacksonville, Florida, and travels to either Georgia or South Carolina the other two states within the synods bounds.
The number of Korean-Americans is growing fast within the Synod of South Atlantic. A task force is in its second year of studying the possibility of creating a nongeographic Korean American presbytery in the synod. Also growing rapidly are the new church development/transformations. Exploration and feasibility studies and special ministry project start-ups are receiving more attention. With the growing communities of persons of Hispanic, Haitian, Cambodian, African, and Brazilian backgrounds, there are many reasons to celebrate multicultural and multiethnic ministries. To help meet the populations needs a Portugese-speaking Brazilian consultant has been added to the synods staff.
There are 290,619 members in 993 churches in the Synod of South Atlantic. The synod has a covenant with each of the following educational institutions within its bounds: Agnes Scott College and Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia; Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida; Johnson C. Smith Theological Seminary in Atlanta, Georgia; Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina; and Raban Gap-Nacoochee School in Rabun Gap, Georgia.
