On December 26, 2004, one of the largest disasters in recent years struck Southeast Asia and parts of the east coast of Africa.

From those first moments of horror and disbelief, shock and chaos, followed by despair and grief, the journey to recovery for the hundreds of thousands of people affected by the catastrophic events of that day has been a long and difficult one.

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance joined with other members of Action by Churches Together (ACT) International in ACT’s biggest collective response as an alliance.

The process of rehabilitation is about change over time, and this transformation can be seen in the lives and stories of the people. PDA has been following some of the survivors for the last three years. The video clips below share their stories of hope out of the tsunami-caused chaos.

A summary of the ACT members’ response PDF icon provides a snapshot of the overall work during the last three years and constitutes a glimpse into the commitment of the communities affected by the disaster — to reclaim hope and to overcome overwhelming odds.

Sri Lanka

While most of PDA’s response has been in Indonesia, PDA is supporting the work of Chenoa Stock, Companionship Facilitator for the Joining Hands Network in Sri Lanka — Praja Abhilasha. Chenoa is working with small fisheries groups, women groups and laborers who were affected by the tsunami.

The following flash slideshow shows recovery efforts in Sri Lanka. Flash icon
