Volunteers

Urgent need for volunteers in Presbytery of East Iowa

The clean-up process is complete in many homes affected by flooding earlier this year, but volunteers are still urgently needed within the Presbytery of East Iowa to help in the reconstruction and recovery efforts.

Three Presbyterian congregations in this presbytery, St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Iowa City and Christ Church and Westminster Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids are hosting work groups that are coming in from around the country.

Individuals or work teams are still needed. Volunteers wanting to stay overnight should contact the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) Call Center at (866) 732-6121 or register online. .

If you can help for one day or are interested in opportunities in other Presbytery of East Iowa locations please contact Richard Tiegs at the Presbytery of East Iowa, (319) 354-9220, x201.

Call for Contractor answered

There was a wonderful response to the request for help that went out for a structural engineer or contractor.  Calls came in from Florida, Minnesota and Wisconsin but, in the end, as so often happens, the call was answered by a neighbor.  Ron Massner, a contractor out of Mediapolis, toured homes in the Oakville area to determine their structural integrity. His expertise in how to shore up ceilings and what to look for when determining the viability of foundations was invaluable as he inspected homes in Oakville. Mediapolis site coordinator, Jeanne Carter was actually Ron's 6th grade teacher and she commented "It's always so nice to see former pupils turn out so well and to give back to the community."

Still needed:

1. Home inspector

2. Someone to answer the phones, make appointments and help keep records

If you have the needed skills and are interested in volunteering for either of these two positions, please contact Stan Tate, site coordinator for Oakville, Iowa.
