Presbyterian Disaster Assistance has recently provided $20,000 from One Great Hour of Sharing and special designated funds to help restock the medical depot of the Christian Health Association of Liberia (CHAL) and to rebuild its medical supply chain.
Until 2000, the main activity for CHAL was the provision of essential medicines and medical supplies to its rural-based constituency who then paid for their purchases and enabled a revolving fund for future purchases. Bulk purchasing allowed all of the faith-based health institutions to get better prices.
During the mass civil unrest, the stores of medicines and supplies were looted, and the lack of security effectively ended the medical supply program. With the coming of peace and reconstruction, CHAL has been endeavoring to re-establish itself as a provider of essential medicines and medical supplies to its rural membership and a revolving fund to ensure a sustainable and affordable supply of needed medicines and medical supplies to related hospitals and clinics including Presbyterian partners in Liberia, such as the Presbyterian Clinic in Todee and the YMCA clinic in Yekepa. |
