Dwiska Aprilia
16-months-old

Dwiska is the daughter of a laborer who lives in Patuk, Gunung Kidul. She used to be a cute, chubby little girl, and had just learned to walk and speak. Her parents really felt happy.

When the July 2006 earthquake hit, Dwiska was sleeping. Although her father tried to protect her, building debris fell on her right leg, and the leg was amputated in a hospital at Gunung Kidul.

Dwiska was found by our field worker in Gunung Kidul and brought to YAKKUM Rehabilitation Center for further treatments. Dwiska is now supported by her mother for her mobility, and she shrieks when she crawls because of the pain. A prosthesis is being prepared for her.

Isnaeni was sleeping when the earthquake hit. Her mother was going to a small shop, and her father was going to the field to work. Her parents had no time to save her. Buried in the ruins for two hours, she was unconscious when found. Her body was smeared with blood. Isnaeni suffered a fractured leg, and her head was seriously injured.

She was brought to the nearest hospital to get first aid. Fortunately, our field worker found her, and she was brought to YAKKUM Rehabilitation Center. At first, she looked so anxious. After several weeks of receiving medical treatments from the medical team, she began looking better. Her smile starts to beautify her face now.

Lia Aprilia
6-years-old

Lia is the youngest daughter of a laborer family from Sumber Agung, Jetis, Bantul. She has just finished study in kindergarten and prepared for elementary level. Her cheerfulness turned into sadness when earthquake hit. Her home was totally destroyed.

Lia needed medical treatment because she got an open wound on her left hand. After receiving wound care at YAKKUM Rehabilitation Center for several weeks, she was allowed to go home. She stays at her grandmother’s house because her own house could not be occupied. She said that she is excited to go to school, now that her left hand is getting better.

Mohamad comes from Prambanan, and was just waking when the earthquake hit. He went immediately out of his house, but his neighbor’s wall fell on his left leg. He could not remember what happened after that, because he was unconscious.

Mohamad was referred to YAKKUM Rehabilitation Center by a hospital that gave him first aid. He received medical treatments at the center, and is now walking with the assistance of a pair of crutches. He is excited to be studying in Senior High School.
