As in the gulf coast of the United States, recovery from the tsunami is taking time as both land ownership and zoning issues get worked out by the respective governments in the affected countries.
Presbyterian Disaster Assistance has just sent additional tsunami funds to support the building of homes for 50 Dalit families in Adavuladeevi Village in the state of Andhra Pradesh. The Dalit are the lowest class in India and suffer greatly, performing the most debasing work in the country.
The government has provided land to the families and now, after waiting over a year and a half, the land records are complete, allowing for the building to begin.
Recovery takes time and patience. We are grateful that the response work continues in these affected areas even as external international organizations have left. The beauty of the church-based ACT alliance is that our partners are there to walk the long road to recovery with those who have suffered so much. |
