The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) joins the world in mourning for the increasing numbers killed or injured by the tsunami disaster. We grieve as more accurate information brings in ever higher numbers of those killed by the tsunami. We are grateful that, through our Presbyterian Disaster Assistance Program (PDA), we are part of an ecumenical network of relief agencies that make a real difference around the world. These networks provide us with trained and experienced staff and established and proven procedures. As health conditions deteriorate and pure water becomes scarce, funds advanced from PDA are already in transit to affected regions.
Reports received by the PC(USA)'s Worldwide Ministries staff indicate that all mission workers in the affected regions are safe.
We are grateful for partner churches that provide information and the incarnated presence of Christ's love. Many of these partners have lost members and have had seaside church structures damaged. With the generous support of its constituencies, agencies, programs, staff and mission personnel, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) will continue its support to see through the challenging process of transition and of rebuilding and rehabilitation of many communities.
At this point PDA has committed over $300,000 to relief efforts and is collecting additional funds through a special account: DR000167. Funds can be sent through local Presbyterian churches or to:
