Returning to sea, returning to work in India

In its response following the tsunami, ACT members are providing new boats to fishermen in villages hit by the tsunami on India's eastern coast, including Annappanpettai (Cuddalore), Anichankuppam (Villupuram) and Nallavadu (Pondicherry). This project is part of a rehabilitation program and assists people in returning to work and restoring their livelihoods.   Photo of fishing crew on the new boat's maiden voyage
Returning to work, a group of fishermen heads out to sea on their boat's maiden voyage.

In the past few weeks, the first of the new boats have been delivered and launched. Howard Jost, director of the project, says the launch of the first boats was the culmination of a lot of work by ACT members following the tsunami. He adds that the men caught a few fish and shared them with people back on shore. "It was a wonderful taste to eat the result of everyone's sincere efforts," he says.

There is a plan to purchase and deliver at least 90 boats, each of which will also come with a 10-horsepower engine and two sets of nets.
