More than 300 fires are still burning in California. The fires began on June 20, and at the peak there were 1,783 fires burning statewide. California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger reported that a total of 520,000 acres had burned so far throughout California and that 67 structures had been destroyed. One of the major blazes was the Basin Complex wildfire in the Los Padres National Forest, which was threatening Big Sur. Some 2,000 firefighters were battling to protect that resort area.
John Robinson, Associate for U.S. Disaster Response, has been in contact with presbyteries in the Sierra Mission region, which includes the areas where most of the fires are located, including the area of Sacramento. At this time, most of the damage is to the forest, and a minimal number of homes have been destroyed; the presbyteries feel they are able to provide an appropriate response.
We will post information to the PDA Web site as additional information or needs are received. Please keep the citizens of California and those working long hours to battle the blazes in your prayers. |
