As the media has reported, the town of Greensburg was utterly and totally destroyed. How there were not more than 10 fatalities is a true miracle of God. The only two buildings left standing in the town are the huge grain elevator and part of the county courthouse. Some houses and businesses on the outskirts of town were damaged greatly, but are still there.

There is currently NO NEED in Greensburg for water, clothes or food. The roughly 1,400 people displaced by the tornado are living with friends and family and have no need for, or room to store, any supplies. As of yesterday (May 11, 2007), NO volunteers were being processed from outside Kansas. There is a 211-call center set up in Wichita accepting requests to volunteer, but at present there are no plans to allow out of state volunteers in the immediate Greensburg area.
The people of the state of Kansas have done an incredible job of responding to this disaster. They have donated plenty of supplies and manpower. They are collecting financial donations all over the state for the "Green for Greensburg" fund.
It will take years to rebuild Greensburg, and there is currently much discussion as to how many people will actually rebuild their homes in the town. Most experts predict only one half to two thirds of the old residents will come back. It will take much time and hard work to bring back a whole city.
What does Greensburg need now? Prayer and more prayer.
What do the displaced residents of what used to be Greensburg need?
Prayer and more prayer. In due time (months if not years from now) there will be need for building supplies and household items, but those things ARE NOT NEEDED OR WANTED at this time. Trust me, THE greatest thing any of us can do to help those in Kansas is PRAY. |
